چکیده

Recent numerical and theoretical studies have demonstrated that the modes at threshold of a random laser are in direct correspondance with the resonances of the same system without gain, a feature which is well known in a conventional laser but which was not known until recently for a random laser. This paper presents numerical results, which extend such studies to the multimode regime that takes place when the pumping rate is progressively increased above threshold. Behavior that is already known in standard lasers, such as mode competition and nonlinear wave-mixing, are shown to also take place in random lasers thus reinforcing their recent modal description. However, due to the complexity of the laser modes and to the openness of such lasers, which requires large external pumping to compensate for strong losses, one observes that these effects are more pronounced than in a conventional laser.

Experimental Measurements of Self-Phasing Due to Nonlinear Effects in Passively Coupled Fiber Lasers

Nonlinear effects are measured in passively coherently combined fiber lasers. We show that these effects can completely compensate for random fiber path length errors and promote robust lasing under many conditions. OCIS codes: (140.3298) Laser Beam Combining; (140.3410) Laser resonators

odes of random lasers

In conventional lasers, the optical cavity that confines the photons also determines essential characteristics of the lasing modes such as wavelength, emission pattern, directivity, and polarization. In random lasers, which do not have mirrors or a well-defined cavity, light is confined within the gain medium by means of multiple scattering. The sharp peaks in the emission spectra of semiconduc...

Measuring maximal eigenvalue distribution of Wishart random matrices with coupled lasers.

We determined the probability distribution of the combined output power from 25 coupled fiber lasers and show that it agrees well with the Tracy-Widom and Majumdar-Vergassola distributions of the largest eigenvalue of Wishart random matrices with no fitting parameters. This was achieved with 500,000 measurements of the combined output power from the fiber lasers, that continuously changes with ...

Influence of spatial correlations on the lasing threshold of random lasers.

The lasing threshold of a random laser is computed numerically from a generic model. It is shown that spatial correlations of the disorder in the medium (i.e., dielectric constant) lead to an increase of the decay rates of the eigenmodes and of the lasing threshold. This is in conflict with predictions that such correlations should lower the threshold. While all results are derived for photonic...

Speckle experiments in random lasers.

We present measurements of speckle in a random laser. We analyze its first-order statistics and show that, contrary to what might be expected for passive systems, analyses of the intensity distribution P(I) and the speckle spot size do provide information about light transport inside the system. P(I) is used to determine the degree to which an incident probe is amplified by the random laser. Th...
